The Galapagos, Ecuador (day 1)

I flew into Baltra Airport on Baltra Island on Tuesday. My tour operators met those members of my tour who were on my flight, and we were taken by bus to a dock where we boarded our ship, The Santa Cruz, via "panga" (what we'd call a zodiac).

The Santa Cruz is a huge ship, normally meant to carry 90+ passengers, but we are not even half full due to the post-holiday low season, which is very nice and relaxing! The ship is a 1st class operation, meals are great, and the guides are fantastic.

Our first afternoon we were taken to North Seymour Island for a walk along the coast and interior of the island. The island is desolate, dry, and has little vegetation. It is hot here, and somewhat humid, but I'm certainly not complaining. I was surprise to find cacti here!

Though I'm not such a fan of the landscape, the wildlife here is unbelievable! Today I saw multiple birds (including the blue-footed boobies & the frigates, who puff up a red sack in their neck for mate attraction), land iguanas, marine iguanas, and many sea lions. It is shocking how close they let you get to them! They have absolutely no fear and actually move toward you instead of away! They are clearly just as interested in us humans as we are in them! Amazing! We even watched a baby seal feeding on it's mother, quite literally from 3 feet away. So cool!

Tomorrow's adventure includes snorkeling in the morning & walking the lava fields in the afternoon, with educational lectures in between.
